Drug Addiction And Rehab

For those with severe drug addiction problems, treatment usually starts with a detoxification program in a resident rehab facility. Medical attention is needed as withdrawal symptoms can be very severe and may need professional medical, psychological and biological help to keep the addict safe. It's important to treat every aspect of a drug addict in order to ensure success.

Rehab facilities used to be a part of a hospital and treated only the biological aspect of drug addiction with no comfort or moral support for the patients. Often times, drug addicts were sent to mental hospitals that had very little in the way of psychological help for the addiction itself. Today's drug rehab clinics focused on not just the medical addiction, but also on the psychological aspect and offer peace and scenic comfort as well as medical and psychological help.

Many rehab clinics take on a holistic approach treating the whole person instead of just a drug addiction itself. You will often see group therapy, nutrition therapy, occupational therapy, reentry therapy as well as a physical exercise program. The holistic approach is meant to treat every aspect of the addicted persons life enabling a good success rate

Categorizing rehab centers into two distinctive and separate entities with treatment based on either modern medicine or spiritualism. Often times, modern medicine offers a better success rate as the withdrawal symptoms and detoxification may need not just emotional and mental support but medical support as well.

Social reentry programs are just as important as any other aspect to the treatment of a recovering addict. It's important that they understand that reentry into the social norm may be difficult and without the emotional and physical support of family and friends can be a disaster. Treatment can often go on throughout the life of an addict, because drug addiction is a disease, not just a social or economical status.

Many rehab programs will incorporate the family and social group of the addict into the program, which enables those involved to understand better what the addict is going through and how to help. Family involvement is not only encouraged but at times mandatory according to the treatment program and although it can be difficult for all involved results in a better success rate overall.

It's important that all involved understand that drug addiction is a disease and not necessarily a choice. Recovery from drug addiction is often painful, emotional and can be disastrous financially. But the choices of continual use and its effects versus being a healthy and whole individual make these choices a necessary one. Individual treatment plans and the drug addict need to be assessed before any treatment plan can commence or drug rehab can work.
